Desert Bus 2012

So it's that time of the year again, and I've been silent since I'm trying to get a lot of different things prepped for the holidays since I'm really not doing anything but working and watching Desert Bus for the next week. I will have a tutorial up in a day or two, and doing a few small crafty things while watching so I don't feel useless, so there.
Some of you are new and weren't here when my life revolved around this last year, so here's a quick recap.
The fine folks from LoadingReadyRun, who create awesome online sketch comedies, have been running a marathon of the game Desert Bus to raise money for the Child's Play Charity every November since 2007.
Desert Bus is a minigame from the unreleased 'Penn & Teller's Smoke and Mirrors', you can read more about it here on the wiki page.
More about Child's Play can be found on their website http://www.childsplaycharity.org/
And of course if you want to join in on watching them sing songs, read books, auction off donated items and really, just do fun things, go here http://desertbus.org/
Also, if I really have to twist your arm to go check it out, here are some of my favorite clips from last year.
Our first clip is the opening they did, really put a lot of effort into it and getting everyone pumped for the awesome. ^_^

Nappa(Takahata101) plays who is a kitty.

Alex hosting his own call-in show, The Derpline. If you like it, there are three more on Youtube here, here, and here.

This last one I'm posting is just because it's special to Tayron and I. Kroze and Matt last year kept going on about MLP:FiM, and this song is what got us to actually watch the new series and get hooked.

Of course there are so many other videos I can post since the LRR crew did an amazing job as they do every year, but it does go on for roughly a week straight, 24/7, and I don't have enough space or time. Tune in and check it out, again here at http://desertbus.org/

Wreck-It Ralph

I just got back from seeing Wreck-It Ralph today, and I have to say I'm impressed with the movie. I'd seen some spoiler-free reviews in the past few days because I couldn't quite wait until today to watch them after watching the movie, so my expectations were lower going into it. Not low, just lower than what they were before seeing the reviews. And the movie just blew me away. Stripping away the video game-ness that some people say is pandering, the heart of the movie is an amazing story about motivations, friendship, and the truth behind what it is to be a real hero. I loved this movie just for that story, and it's ability to almost make me cry. And let me tell you, with how much I've seen and read in my lifetime, it's hard to get me to cry at works of fiction. Enough about me, back to the movie. We'll start from the beginning with a few interesting advertisements and the previews.

Of course, in a movie about video games, they had to have adverts featuring video game characters.
Sonic the Hedgehog in a Progressive ad here on Youtube.
There was a shorter cut version of this ad here, for the upcoming Playstation All-Stars: Battle Royale game.

When this ad came on, I thought the previews had started since it seems like an interesting movie about 2 bloggers connecting with each other and forming a bond. Was not expecting what actually happened, and loved it!
The last advertisement-type thing as a short movie made through a Sprite contest, Sprite Films Presents: Prom Night. I can't actually find this online anywhere, when I do find it I'll post it right here.

On to the Previews!
First one up is 'Rise of the Guardians.'

Next up is 'Escape From Planet Earth.'

Here we have 'The Croods.'

Finally is 'Oz The Great and Powerful'

Since this is a Pixar film, there is a short in front of the movie, this one's called 'Paperman.' I just love these shorts, that they keep coming up with these amazing stories told with no words at all, and every one of them is different, unique and engaging. Paperman, while still being CGI, has an art style I'm finding hard to explain right now. It's like a combination of traditional animation and CGI, completely beautiful. A+
Before the movie starts, we get 8-bit Steamboat Willie, I thought that was a nice touch. Some of the side dialogue in the movie is hilarious, like here in the opening when the narration is going on, you can hear one of the kids from 1982 say "This animation's so real!" It's little touches like that side dialogue and cameos/references going on in the background that makes me want to watch this movie over and over just to catch everything. Like in the party for the game's 30th anniversary, we noticed Skrillex was the DJ, and if you blink during the scene where Ralph's escape pod is crashing through Game Central you can miss the rings flying out as he apparently squishes Sonic.
Going back to the story before I get too fangirly here, Ralph has been labelled and they've all been put into their boxes or roles to play on this video game stage. They've pushed him so far into his character archetype, they don't even care he's a person. One thing I did find kind of odd, was how accepting the people of Niceville were of him after everything he did to them, what with almost getting their game taken out. With Felix, at least there was a connection and shared feelings on being abandoned/thrown away by people you just wanted to be friends with, but nothing with the others in his game. I understand he's a hero now, in every sense of the word, and they should like him and not keep pushing people into labels other people have bestowed upon you, but it just seems they've flipped too hard from hating into loving him. Even with that minor grievance, I sill loved every bit of this movie, and everyone should see this film, whether you're into video games or not. If you're not a fan of gaming, you won't get all the references and cameos the movie has, but the story and visuals will still entertain you.

I leave you with a Perler Bead Ralph I mad while looking at one of the movie posters for this film.

Halloween Part Three

Third Halloween post is going to be my first tutorial post. Yay! Today I'm going to show you how to make two easy Halloween crafts: a Pumpkin Pin, and a Creative Casket treat box. Mostly text based for now, pics coming tomorrow since something came up with this storm. Also be sure to read all the instructions before getting your materials ready if you want to make these, since there are optional items you may or may not want to use.

Pumpkin Pins
Materials needed :
1 bag Jumbo Walnuts
Orange and black paints
Green felt
Safety pins or pin backs
Glue
Butter knife
Cutting board
optional - polymer clay in green or brown.
optional - cardstock

Once you have all the materials you need, we'll start off with the walnuts. This is perhaps the hardest part. Placing the walnut on the cutting board and taking the butter knife, you're going to stick it in the bottom of the walnut where the two sides meet. Then, wiggling it back and forth along the join and pushing downwards, the knife will start to open the walnut. Due to the texture on the walnut though, you'll only get it to seperate perfectly with both sides being usable about half the time. If you fail at it the first time, just try again, that's why we bought a whole bag, plus walnuts are delicious.

When you finally get the walnut split in half, you're going to pick out the walnut meat inside and rub off the papery bits inside the walnut to make it as clean as you can. We don't need any of that rolling around your pin later.

Before we get to the painting, you're going to trace the walnut onto the green felt and cut it out. Put it aside for now, you'll be using it later.

Now that your walnut is all cleaned out, time to break out your paints! Starting with the orange, cover the outside of the walnut. It may take several coats before you gets the color you want. Once the orange has completely dried, you use the black to make a jack-o-lantern face on your pumpkin, or you can skip the black for a more natural fall harvest pumpkin.

Time for the stem. I like to use polymer clay to make my stem, in green to match the felt backing we'll use in a later step. You could also use brown for the harvest time pumpkin, or using a bit of the felt, roll it and cut it into a pointy fringe. The fringe lets you glue it down to both the inside and outside of the shell securely.

At this point we're going back to the felt tracing from earlier, and gluing it to the back of the shell. I like to also sandwich cardstock between the shell and felt to make it a bit more sturdy. Finally you're going to glue the pinback to the felt, or wait for the glue to dry from the previous step and use the safety pin to pin it up.

Creative Casket
Materials :
Paper Mache or wooden casket. I got mine from A.C. Moore
Chalkboard paint
Paint of your choice for the inside color
Chalk

After prepping your area like before, you're going to start with the chalkboard paint. Be sure to follow the instructions on the paint you bought, mine at least 2 coats, first one way horizontally/vertically, then a second coat the other direction with an hour dry time between coats. Also it has a 24 hour curing time before you can use chalk on it.

Once the paint has dried, but not cured, you'll be painting the inside of the coffin with your secondary paint. I used orange to make it Halloween-y, but you can use any color you want. Once you're done painting the inside, it should look like this with orange paint.

When the chalkboard paint has finally cured, it's time for the fun part. Using the chalk, draw decorative patterns or messages on it, then fill it with treats and you can give it as a gift.

Halloween Part One

It's that time of the year again, one of my favorite holidays, Halloween! So many good things I've found to share with you all, going to split it into different posts, to make it easier.
Topic of this first post: Videos!

First up is Lindsey Stirling's latest video, Moon Trance.

Still running on the zombie theme is Your Favorite Martian with Zombie Love Song.

Changing it up a bit, we're heading over to the Squirrel Nut Zippers video, Hell.

Scaryweentime appears with The Slender Man Song by Brentalfloss.

Reposting since this is the best video I've seen for this song. Shia LaBeouf(Actual Cannibal).

More fun times

Light post this week, look forward to possibly several posts this weekend as I'm going to Celtic Classic in Bethlehem, PA.

First up today is an amazing comic, Muppet Thor. The title says it all, The Muppets crossed with the Thor movie.
http://occasionalcomics.com/muppet-thor/
When you're down with Muppet Thor, click the home button on the site to read the main comic.

Time now for something to eat. What better to prepare for the upcoming episode in the latest season of Doctor Who than Wibbly Wobbly Timey Wimey Jello in a jar?
http://www.bakingdom.com/2012/08/doctor-who-wibbly-wobbly-timey-wimey-jello-in-a-jar.html

Finishing up today are 2 videos, both awesome in their own right.
The original video by Eytan and the Embassy-Everything Changes goes through the changing looks of rock through time. It's great and you should check it out, but based on my personal preferences, this 'remake' wins my vote.

If you guys like seeing videos on Mondays, you should check out Radio Dead Air, hosted by one of TGWTG's producers. The show starts at 9pm, and from 9-11:30ish Nash takes requests and plays videos. 11:30 is Live WTFIWWY, and then the last few hours are mostly videos from other That guy producers you should check out. This last video is one I caught on the show. It's got great music and awesome visuals.

Torchlight 2

Lets get this out of the way now. The Diablo 3 comparisons are almost a given, being that these are the two major "kill things and take their shit" rpgs to come out this year. That being said, I'm going to try and ramble about the game without comparing the two too much.
I will say though, that I wish Azula's voice actor (Avatar the last airbender) was in this as opposed to Diablo 3...because this games wizard has a lightning skill tree. Any way...

So far I'm not too far into the game, but what of it I played, I thoroughly enjoy.

Right off the bat, you'll notice that graphically its a bit more cartoonish in its look, with lots of bright colors. Which is personally something I quite like about it, cause really, game designers need to realize that even if your story is dark, brooding, and serious...that the world contains color!
Hell it even adds a certain note of contrast, because it means a little less when you see this horrible bleak world caught in war and destroyed....as opposed to seeing a bright colorful one full of life, caught up in the chaos. Because the later just comes across as being a tad more hopeful, something you can actually save, as opposed to already a wasteland.
...But maybe I'm just looking into it too much. Moving on.

The areas between dungeons, optional or otherwise, tend to be huge and sprawling, and randomized every time. Completely random mind you...so instead of large areas connecting each dungeon/city/etc which tend to be the same except for a few changes here and there, you instead get fields which change drastically every time.
What was once a straight shot to the next area, next time around winds up being a long winding path through the fields of that region.

Now, these areas are persistent through a playthrough. So if your path to the next region was a straight shot one time, if you come back to that later in the playthrough, it'll be the same. However, the game does have the option to reroll the entire world, thus randomizing everything again.

I'm not going to go in depth with he classes, since I've only played the wizard so far, but lets say right now I love the hell out of their skill system. Why? Customization...lots of it.
Each class has 3 separate trees of skills to play with, each giving a lot of different options to choose from. As you level, you gain skill points from those levels, fame (think of it as a second level, you gain fame from doing quests and killing champion monsters) which also grants an extra skill point per level.
These skills also not only improve number wise as you level them, but every 5 levels in that skill unlocks better abilities for it.
So that fire bolt you start with at level 1? Later in the game, has its range vastly improved, lights things on fire for longer a duration, and bounces off walls.
Each class also has their own charge ability, which charges as you attack and use your skills, giving your character added bonuses. Like for a wizard, once active, none of your skills use mana for a few seconds. Which in a fire fight, is a godsend.

Speaking of customization, each level you also get stat points to play with. So, you want your wizard to have a high ass strength just...because? You can totally do that.
Or perhaps split evenly between vitality (life) and Focus (your magic stat) so you've got a little more survivability. Cause blowing stuff up is great...but you die, a lot.
These stats also of course effect what equipment you can use. Though most of the stat requirements can be ignored if you're high enough level, which is a feature I kinda like. So you can get the stats for it early and use it a few levels sooner, or just wait, in the case it has a stat requirement you don't want to meet.

Now that said, you can still use pretty much whatever weapons you use, but they all feel so different from one another. From wands, which have a long range attack to them, to claw type weapons, which only hit one enemy but ignore a good chunk of armor.
Though each class does have their own passive skills, which reward you for using certain weapons more suited for that class. Wizards get bonuses to staves/wands, for instance.

Online features! .... I haven't used these yet, so I dunna. It is a welcome addition that it has LAN support though. Also that it has single player! Your single player character also carries over to your multiplayer games.
Now that aspect I'll admit I'm not sure I like, cause, hacking and such.
I actually would have much preferred if the game had its own separate single player character, and one saved upon their servers. Much akin to games like Dungeon Siege, or Sacred 1/2. Still have the single player experience people want, but also have a character saved upon their servers that while not perfect, is much harder to hack/modify.
Although, given that the game has mod support...I suppose I can see why they did this. I'm just on the fence about how this may effect public games.

On a final note, cause I'm running out of things to ramble about...
Pets!
Unlike the first, you get more choices for pets...From the ever imposing wolf, hawk, to the first games cat...panther, bulldog...papillon... Because, what better contrast to a raging barbarian, then having a small fuzzy dog?

Instead of running back to town yourself, and wasting precious time that could be spent murdering enemies for their equipment...you can just load your pet up with a thousand pounds of equipment, and send it back to town to sell it all. Hell, you can even task your pet with bringing back more potions and scrolls.

... I imagine the shopkeepers in the Torchlight universe are used to animals of all shapes and sizes running up to them, packs full of stuff to offload, and carrying a note of things their owner wants.

I'm sure I missed stuff, but that's the bulk of things.
All in all...I love this game to death. It's everything I wanted it to be and more.
For the ridiculously low price of $20, if you like this sorta game, you need to buy this. Now.

Why else should you get this? Because you can play as an engineer with a monocle, and have a goggles wearing ferret as a pet.
